SESSION 5: LEADING OTHERS

Updated: Jun 4

Trying to understand the difference between sympathy and empathy.

My Reflection/ Takeaway from today's Lecture.

Today's lecture was incredibly insightful and transformative for me. Before this session, I saw leadership primarily as a directive role; making decisions and giving orders were key. Learning about Goleman’s leadership styles—coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting, and coaching—expanded my understanding of how different situations and team dynamics require different approaches. This challenged my previous belief that one leadership style fits all situations and made me realize the value of flexibility and adaptability in leadership.

The lecture today really got me thinking about empathy and how crucial it is for good leadership. I used to think leadership was all about strategy and results, but now I see that understanding and connecting with others is just as important. Empathy helps to build trust, encourage teamwork, and enhance communication in the workplace. It made me rethink my approach to leadership and realize the significance of truly understanding my team members' feelings and viewpoints. I want to start incorporating more empathy into how I interact with others, aiming to be a leader who is not only successful but also caring and encouraging.

So, I recently learned about the ‘4 levels of generative listening’ which are downloading, factual listening, empathic listening, and generative listening. It really opened my eyes to the importance of truly listening to others. I realized that I used to just listen on the surface level, more focused on replying than really getting what the other person was saying. This new insight has motivated me to work on my listening skills by diving into deeper levels of listening, especially empathic and generative listening. I believe that by doing this, I can build stronger connections and help create a more inclusive and innovative environment. I'm planning to put this into action by practicing active listening in my daily interactions, making sure I truly understand and appreciate what others have to say. This approach will contribute to a more collaborative and creative workspace.
